8. George Winfield NUSBAUM (John Thomas5, Johannes NUSSBAUM4, Johannes Jacob3, Jacob2, Adam1), M. Born on 22 October 1857 in Weissport, Carbon County, Pennsylvania. George Winfield died in Lehighton, Carbon County, Pennsylvania, on 30 March 1896; he was 38. Religion: Lutheran. .

George shot himself at age 38 after several weeks of a serious illness.

The following front page article was written in the Coal Gazette April 3, 1896:

A Terrible Tragedy - A Well Known and Highly Respected Lehighton Citizen Ends His Life Early This Morning - George W. Nusbaum, the Victim. Temporary Insanity assigned as the cause of the rash act. After bidding his wife goodbye he sends a bullet through his brain---A widow and six children survive---

George W. Nusbaum, the well known dealer in sewing machines, committed suicide at his home on First Street, Lehighton, at 5;45 o'clock Monday morning. The instrument used was a 38-calibre revolver.

The circumstances relating to the terrible deed as briefly told are as follows: Mr. Nusbaum had been confined to his home several weeks past suffering with cold and pains in the head. Sunday he was delirious. Mrs. Nusbaum, his wife, arose Monday morning as usual, and at his request, gave him a powder prescribed by the attending physician. Mrs. Nusbaum then started downstairs to attend to her domestic duties, her husband's parting words being "Goodbye, Mamma." Scarcely had these words reached the ears of the devoted, loving wife, before the sharp report of a revolver, rung out on the still morning air. And upon returning to the room Mrs. Nusbaum was horrified to see her husband lying on the bed, with his life's blood oozing from an ugly wound at the base of the brain near the spinal column. Beside the unconscious, dying husband, stood their 18 year old son, Harry, who rushed to the fatal chamber from an adjoining room, at the sound of the dread explosion, and snatched the weapon from his dying father. Death followed almost immediately.

The suicide is a son of Mr. and Mrs. J. T. Nusbaum. The Nusbaum family is one of the oldest, wealthiest, best known and highly respected in the community.

Besides his aged parents, deceased is survived by a loving, dutiful wife and six children. His wife is a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Long of Packerton. The family consists of four sons - Harry, Bert, Wilbur and George, and two daughters - Hazel and Mamie, the last two named being too young to realize their terrible bereavement. Four brothers and one sister also survive. They are William H., Edward and Frank, of Leighton, the first named being the junior member of the firm of J.T. Nusbaum & Son, and Thomas J. Nusbaum, a well known merchant of Lansford. Mrs. W. Penn Long is a sister.

While skating about 25 years ago he (Mr. G. W. Nusbaum) fell, striking his head upon the ice with a terrible force, and has complained ever since of more or less pain at times, which he attributed as the result of the accident. He was very fond of his wife and family, and his family of interesting children were devoted to their father, to an unusual degree. He was an industrious business man, in easy circumstances, with all the necessary financial help close at hand. These facts make the solution of the tragic affair all the more difficult and seems to bear out the generally accepted theory of the cause of temporary insanity.

On 31 October 1876 when George Winfield was 19, he married Mary Amelia LONG, F, daughter of James LONG, M (17 June 1830-29 August 1898) & Angeline WHITEHEAD, F (16 September 1835-21 May 1920). Born on 16 March 1857 in Packerton, Pennsylvania. Mary Amelia died on 10 November 1903; she was 46. Religion: Methodist. .

After Mary's husband George, died, she took her six children to the Methodist Church which was near their home. This is the reason most of the descendants were not Lutheran.

Mary Amelia died of cancer at the age of 46.

Mary Amelia's Will was unique. She wrote the following to her children: "In the Name of God, amen. I being of sound mind, bequest to my children all my prayers for their salvation; I bequest to them the Christian religion which has been so much comfort to me and I hope may be a solace to them. I bequest to them a hope of reunion when the partings of life are over. Share and share alike may they have in eternal riches. I bequest to them the wish that they may avoid my errors and copy anything that may have been worthy. In the Name of God Who made me, the Christ Who redeemed me and the Holy Ghost Who sanctified me, I make this my last will and testament. Witness, all ye host of Heaven. Witness, time; Witness, eternity. Signed, sealed, and delivered, in this my dying hour." - Mother
